Cultivation
Winter overseeding with ryegrass (warm-season)
Bermuda and zoysia go tan once soil cools past dormancy. Overseeding with cool-season ryegrass keeps a green lawn through winter. This gives temporary winter color on top of a dormant lawn and does not establish the warm-season grass, which will not germinate in cooling fall soil and is seeded in late spring.
Either/or: Either this or Fall pre-emergent (Poa annua), not both this season: a pre-emergent blocks new grass seed for about 12 weeks.

Window: Sep 1 to Nov 30. Window typically open for 2 to 3 weeks.
How to decide
The same chemistry that blocks poa annua seed blocks ryegrass seed. The fall is either winter color from ryegrass or the weed barrier, not both.
